The instructor explains that breaking the wrist, i.e your trying to scoop or flick the ball will cause all sorts of shots including skinny shots, underneath shots and over all you will have bad contact with the ball.  Most of these shots are caused by how the face is at impact if you break your wrist.
For a good chip, you want to lead with your hands and let your shoulders and club face do the work.  Setup your hands in front of the ball, you should create a lower case y with the club and your arms.  During your swing at no point should you break your wrist, the aim for a good golf chip is to guide the club through the ball, using your shoulders as the source of power and movement, remembering that a chip shot is only useful for close to the green shots.  For better control place your hands further down the club.
