In this section, Steve Bishop will analyze a student’s golf swing using the 5 steps

Check your equipment for the loft angle, length of the club and the shaft. Make sure that your clubs are uniform from the driver to the pitching wedge so that you can make sure that you only accomplish one golf swing and that the club will respond to your golf swing properly.

The ball position is centered between his feet. Ideally, the ball position should be a little bit forward to the left. He is putting his weight to the right in order to get behind the ball. This is going to force him to make a large shift on his weight going forward. The left hand is in the mid-body position.  This is not going to promote a hands-ahead-of-the-ball type of approach by the time he reaches the ball. He is going to end up flinging the club head at the ball because he is not developing a good mental picture of what he wants impact to be. Ideally the hands should be a bit on the left thigh which will create a forward leaning shaft from hand position to just slightly behind the ball that will promote a descending blow of the club head to the ball.

His weight is fully transferred on the front foot. The right shoulder is lower than the left shoulder with both of his elbows in front of his chest. This is an indication that he released the club a lot on impact. The right hip has not gone all the way through the shot and as a result the spike of his back foot is still facing back as suppose to be pointing in the direction opposite to the target. The upper body did a lot of movement to generate the swing while the lower body only did little to promote the swing.

The best way to figure out the balance of the golf swing is to determine where the axis point of the body is. Ideally it should be between the shoulders directly behind the sternum and where the spine is. On top of the golf swing, he lifted up considerably and shifted his back toward the target. Through impact, he is shifting well forward into his front foot but by the time that he gets to the ball his axis point is already out in front of the golf ball. The progression of his swing is at setup, the axis point is in the right position, at the top of the swing he shifted his weight center up away from the ball, at forward, he is swinging back down to the ball to try to get his axis point back closer to the ball, on the finish, his swing center moves back up away from the ball.

There is a lot of lag on his golf swing that will put distance to the ball. Unfortunately, because of his swing center being ahead of the ball he is going to have to make up for that distance gap by throwing is right arm at the ball and the angle of the club with the hands is not as much as at the top of the swing. The approach of the club head to the golf ball is very low to the ground. By the time he hits the ball there is very little arc on his golf swing. Whenever you throw your right arm on the ball you are creating a lot of tension on your golf swing resulting in an early release.

The ball should be positioned closer to the left leg, he should shift forward a little bit on his posture and the left hand should be a little bit more into the left thigh to give more angle to the shaft.
